1. Having a snow plan in place. Create a strategic plan to clear the snow. It must include Timing, Completion Speed, Crew Size, Snow Pile Locations, expected communication, etc.
2. Complete and Proper training. – Just having the snow service plan is not enough. Ensuring that your employees have designated parking, and that the snow escalation plan is posted in the break room and employee areas. Allows your staff to know what to do when the snow starts coming down.
You must ensure that the crews providing the service understand the plan and can properly use the equipment and deicing material correctly.
3. Using the right types of Deicer. Not all deicing material reacts the same way. Fluctuating surfaces and temperatures affect the efficiency of the material applied to the parking lot and sidewalks.
4. Promote Awareness. Placing sidewalk signs and safety notices will help to make customers and employees that they need to be cautious when entering the location or exiting the location. Advocating proper footwear and careful actions are crucial to preventing slip and falls.
5. Monitoring Conditions. Local news is not always completely reliable. Access to premium weather services aid in storm preparation. Snowfall is not the only concern, melting and refreezing is a constant issue.
6. Being proactive. Always pre-treat lots and walkways before snow events to prevent the bond of snow and ice to pavement. Clearing snow after pre-treating leaves a cleaner, less slippery surface and allows your customers and clients to enter your locations much safer.
